Number Plate not According to Pattern/Not Legible/Obscured

In India, it is mandatory for all motor vehicles to display a number plate that conforms to the prescribed pattern and is clearly legible. The number plate should be visible and should display the registration number of the vehicle in a clear and distinct manner.

If a motor vehicle is found to have a number plate that does not conform to the prescribed pattern, is not legible or is obscured, the driver/owner of the vehicle may be fined. The fine amount may vary from state to state, but it can range from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000 or more depending on the type of violation.
