In India, it is mandatory for all vehicles to provide a smooth passage to an ambulance carrying a patient. The Supreme Court of India has also issued directives on this matter, stating that the passage of an ambulance should be given top priority to ensure timely medical aid for the patient.
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, if a driver fails to provide a smooth passage to an ambulance, they can be fined up to Rs. 10,000. The driver can also be booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which may result in imprisonment.
