As per Rule 21(25) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the use of a mobile phone while driving a vehicle is strictly prohibited. The rule states that “no driver shall while driving a motor vehicle on a public road, use a mobile phone.”
If a driver is caught using a mobile phone while driving, he or she can be fined Rs. 5,000 as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Moreover, if the use of a mobile phone while driving causes any accident or harm to any person, the driver can face severe legal consequences, including imprisonment.
